Our nighttime routine and what we do while we sleep is just as important as what we do when we get up in the morning. Browse the list and see if you’re doing everything you can to wake up with perfect skin.
Get 7-9 hours of sleep.
Sleeping enough is essential for most daily functions, but it’s also imperative when it comes to repairing the damage your skin gets from the day and may end up staying inflamed through the night. Your skin will lose needed moisture and elasticity, causing premature wrinkles. You’ll wake up with bags under your eyes too, so get your hours in, nothing helps skin more than this.
Drink lots of water.
Water causes your skin to look plumper and brighter, with more elasticity and less blemishes. File this under another obvious self-care habit you should always be doing, but especially if you want gorgeous skin.
Cleanse and moisturize.
If you ever go to bed with makeup on, expect a nice outcropping of acne when you wake up. Do this for enough nights and your skin won’t be able to breathe or fully recover and your pores will stay clogged and expect to see more wrinkles around your eyes from accidentally rubbing off eye makeup throughout the night. Cleansing followed by moisturizing is a necessity for makeup wearers, but even if you haven’t just returned from a night out, keep your facial brush and moisturizer handy, your skin will thank you for it.
Use a silk or copper oxide pillowcase.
Silk and copper oxide have both touted anti-wrinkle and antibacterial properties and they may benefit your hair as well. This is an easy trick for preventing fine-lines while doing nothing but sleep. Ensure you’re getting the real thing though, cheap knock-offs unfortunately won’t produce the same results.
Sleep on your back.
Sleeping on your side or on your stomach creates extra creases in your skin on your face and body that can be avoided. Training yourself to sleep a different way can be a pain at first, but if you want to stay wrinkle-free and prevent a variety of health issues, try sleeping on your back.
Keep your bedroom cool.
Sweating during the night is not ideal for your skin, and it’s not great for your sleep quality either. Make it cold enough, so that you aren’t woken up in the night to throw off blankets or change your sheets because it got too hot. Your skin will be glowing in the morning instead of shiny and congested.
Elevate your head.
This will keep blood from pooling around your eyes and prevent dark circles, and it could improve the overall quality of your sleep by helping you breathe better and get a deeper, more restorative sleep.
Keep sunlight out.
Sunlight can be distracting for sleep, but also damaging to your skin. Keep the sun out so your skin and your sleep stay unaffected by harmful UV rays.
Use a special pillow.
Sleeping elevated or on your back can get a bit easier if you have a pillow that stabilizes and cradles your head. Some of these are still relatively flat with cutouts for your face to prevent wrinkles if you still insist on sleeping on your sides. There are other more comprehensive pillows that keep you in one position and those have claimed to prevent a host of skincare issues while you’re sleeping as well as neck pain.
Go to bed early.
Your circadian rhythm dictates when your skin starts repairing itself, so around 9pm start your skincare routine and head to bed to get the most out of your products. The peak time for skin renewal is between 11 and midnight, so if you’re asleep by then you’ll be better off.
Don't eat dairy.
Dairy has been connected to breakouts, so if you can avoid dairy before bed or in general and you haven’t found acne relief otherwise, this could be your solution. Diet determines a lot of how our skin looks because nutrients go directly to our skin like drinking water does, so eliminate that glass of milk before bed and wake up with a flawless complexion.
Use a humidifier.
If you live somewhere particularly dry or have dry skin then this is a must-have. You can lose a lot of moisture while you sleep and wake up with cracked lips and nobody wants to deal with that. Even a little water-bottle sized humidifier by your bed can keep your skin from drying out and this can help reduce snoring as well.
Spot treat acne.
If you hate going to bed with acne and sometimes even waking up with more acne because you’ve been sleeping on not-so-clean sheets or you didn’t wash your face then next time remember to spot treat before you go to bed. Acne creams with salicylic acid or patches can help reduce the appearance of breakouts overnight, so try this out this convenient way to clearer skin.
